8/16/2023 0 Comments Third man vault 55For the large pool of The White Stripes fans this mono mix will still be confusing enough (Jack has already needed to release a video explaining what mono is) but it'll set it apart from the regular release enough for fans to hop on board. To offer yet another stereo cut of Elephant would be an underwhelming release - Even if it was cut by SH&KG like Icky Thump, that would appeal only to the few of us here on forums like this who really care about mastering. TMR and the legacy of The White Stripes is a business and Jack is an astute businessman, he'll do handsomely out of vault #55 and he knows it. Jack has always been a gimmick guy, right from the outset with the red, white and black colours on everything White Stripes related. I agree with you, of course it's a gimmick but it's a gimmick I'm prepared to pay for and listen to. Looking forward to mounting my mono cart to my tonearm and seeing how it spins! Jack has earned my hard earned cash this time, I'm in. This mono mix is not a "ridiculous" idea, it's a business decision based on knowing his fan base. He's piggybacking on the scarcity of the Icky Thump mono and cashing in on FOMO, he knows his fan base are "collectors" and gimmicks are collector items. I know White Blood Cells was the one that put them on the map but Elephant will be and probably definitely is their ‘classic album.’ I can just about see an episode of the Classic Albums documentary series on it lol.Ĭlick to expand.I agree with you, of course it's a gimmick but it's a gimmick I'm prepared to pay for and listen to. A lot warmer of an album than any of their albums, more inviting and in my opinion, hands down their best (I know I’m not alone in that sentiment lol). More suited to the mono sound and feel I think. Now all these years later I’m intrigued to hear it. I have not heard the mono Icky Thump but I am aware of it, just had no idea what the Vault was when that first one was announced (I actually remember seeing a used copy of it at my local record store going for about $100 back in 2012/2013 or so) and was a bit confused as to why Jack would mix that particular album in mono. Mono mixes usually to me sound more punchy and forward and fuller which does very well for heavier garage-like acts, especially those of the late 60s in the UK, like Pretty Things, the Action, the Creation, The Who, Kinks, Small Faces, Stones, etc. I’ve always thought mono would be a good fit for the White Stripes.
